This original 7 x 10" magazine ad from 1951 sponsored by Bell Telephone Systems lets' the reader know that it takes 500 tons of equipment for just one telephone exchange.   Of course an "exchange" is equal to one 10,000 line Dial Telephone Exchange, so slightly less alarming after that is made clear!
